BARBARA SPINELLI

Barbara Spinelli (1982) is a women’s right activist and lawyer (migration law, refugee law and criminal law, with a gender perspective).

B.S. is member of the Italian NGO Platform “30 years CEDAW-work in progress” and of Italian association of Democratic Lawyer (Giuristi Democratici), where she coordinates the research unit on gender and law.

B.S. is co-founder of "NO MORE! Convenzione contro la violenza maschile sulle donne - femminicidio".

Since 2006 she is involved in gender analysis of drafting legislation. Her activity is focused on violence against women (including domestic violence, forced marriage, honour based violence, gender based persecution, femicide and feminicide) and on the implementation in the national legislation of women’s rights treaties.

She has given numerous academic presentations and training on femicide, feminicide, violence against women and women’s rights to lawyers, social workers, police forces, teachers, also in cooperation with shelters and women’s NGO.

She is author of the book “Femminicidio. Dalla denuncia sociale al riconoscimento giuridico internazionale”, FrancoAngeli, 2008, and of numerous publications on violence against women and femicide

In 2010 she promoted a 3-day training on women’s human rights inviting in Italy Special Rapporteur on violence against women Ms. Rashida Manjoo.

She has written and presented during 49th CEDAW session (2011) the shadow report on CEDAW implementation in Italy, in representation of the Italian NGO Platform “30 years CEDAW-work in progress”.

She has cooperated to the drafting of HRI shadow report on CEDAW article 2 and 12 implementation in Italy, with focus on women’s Drug dependence, HIV and the criminal Justice system. .
She was invited as expert by the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women Rashida Manjoo to the expert group meeting on gender – motivated killings of women, that was convened in the UNFPA New York headquarters on Wednesday October 12, 2011. She presented the Expert Paper on “Femicide and feminicide in Europe. Gender motivated killings of women as a result of intimate partner violence”.

In 2012 she was the official NGO’s contact point for the Country visit in Italy of the Special Rapporteur on violence against women Ms. Rashida Manjoo (15th-26th January 2012).

In 2013 she was invited as expert by UNODC to the Expert group meeting in Bangkok for the identification of guidelines for the implementation of the United Nations Updated Model Strategies and Practical Measures on the Elimination of Violence against women in the Field of Crime

B.S. is also a blogger and she has written many articles for national newspapers and contributed to media coverage on women’s rights.
